Commonly known as the silent thief of eye sight, Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness world wide.

So what exactly is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is usually caused by fluid building up in the front part of the eye, which increases pressure inside the eye. This causes damage to the nerves and if it is not diagnosed and treated early, it can lead to blindness.

Over the years, Glaucoma can develop slowly over time with little or no symptoms at all. Vision around the edges of the eyes gradually reduces without the knowledge of the patient. Due to its slow progression, one might not notice symptoms of blurred vision, or seeing rainbow circles around bright lights. Both eyes may be affected but it may be worse in one eye.

There are some rare cases where Glaucoma can suddenly develop. With such a sudden cause, a patient may experience nausea and vomiting, red eyes, intensive eye pain, seeing rings around lights, tenderness around the eyes and blurred vision.

It is advisable to see a doctor as soon as you experience such symptoms or do regular eye check ups to be on a safer side.

At Dr. Arunga’s Eye Hospital, we offer comprehensive eye scans and walk the journey with patients who are diagnosed with Glaucoma. We also guide them on how to keep in check with their eye pressure by constantly encouraging them to do regular eye pressure tests for monitoring purposes.

We are here to serve you and walk this journey with you so make an appointment with us for an eye examination.
