DR. SIMON ARUNGA - The New COECSA President!! COECSA, the College of Ophthalmology of Eastern Central and Southern Africa, is a specialized virtual college that aims to improve eye care in its region by addressing the shortage of ophthalmologists, setting standards for practice, promoting training and continuing professional development, and facilitating research. It was founded in 2012 following the merger of two existing organizations and focuses on human resources for health through quality ophthalmology education and training programs for residency and superspecialty fellowships.The College hereby Congratulates Dr. Simon Arunga on his election as the new COECSA President!!
Dr. Arunga takes over from Prof. John Nkurikiye whose 6year tenure of office has now come to an end. Prof. John will however continue to serve the College as a Member of the Executive in his capacity as immediate past-president.Until his election as President of COECSA, Dr. Arunga has been actively serving the College in his capacity as Editor in Chief for our journal, JOECSA.
Dr Arunga is an academic consultant ophthalmologist, founding chairman of Dr Arunga's Eye Hospital, Senior lecturer at Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) in southern Uganda and Honorary assistant professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, UK.
He has published over 30 peer-reviewed papers and is the recipient of several research grants. Currently, he is Co Investigator at the MUST Data Science Research Hub (MUDSReH) and the team lead of the Multimodal Database for Retinal Images in an African population (MoDRIA).
